Analysis tools

Analysis tools are available in several components of SE Suite with the objective to identify the cause of a defect or problem. The following analysis tools are available:

5 Whys

The “5 Whys" is a technique used to find the root cause of a defect or problem. This tool is widely used in the area of quality, but, in practical terms, it can be applied to any area. It was developed by Sakichi Toyoda (founder of Toyota), and was used in Toyota production system during the development of manufacturing methodologies. This tool allows to keep a record of how a basic cause was found through successive Why questions. See more details in the 5 Whys section.

Ishikawa

"Fishbone", also known as cause and effect diagram was proposed by Ishikawa in the sixties. Originally created to identify the causes of problems in the production process of a product (industry), its use has gone beyond and has been applied to any type of organizational problems. The "Ishikawa" tool starts from a “problem” (considered as the effect of the diagram) and from all its influence (considered as the causes of the diagram). This effect and the causes identified are placed in the shape of a fish bone, making it much easier to visualize the relationship between all causes and how the effect (problem) can be solved. See further details in the Ishikawa section.

FTA

The fault tree diagram (Fault Tree Analysis - FTA) is a diagram, associated with a specific failure in the system (effect), called top event and basic failures (causes), called primary events. That is why it is considered as a top down tool (from the top to the bottom). In other words, it is a logical deductive process that starts from an undesired event, trying all combinations of "root causes" that can lead to the occurrence of this event. See further details in the FTA section.
